SPORTSREACH 5ASIDE LEAGUE

13 Mar

After being cancelled on Wednesday 28th February because of snow on the astroturf, we were back again on the 7th March with 4 more fixtures.  In the early games Young Guns were looking to continue their winning run against Carnforth and Galgate were looking to move up the table with a win over Crown Lane.  Young Guns took an early 2 – 0 lead but Carnforth soon pulled it back level only for Young Guns to get back on top and score 2 more and take a deserved 4 – 2 lead at half time.  Into the second half and after an early penalty, Carnforth started to come more and more into the game.  Carnforth’s Callum Thompson in particular was a handful in attack and was having a very clinical night.  Young Guns kept getting a goal or two ahead only for Carnforth to pull them back.  Joel Stewart was the star man for Young Guns and in a game where both teams opened up and tried to outscore each other, it was Young Guns who took the points by an odd goal in 19.  In the Crown Lane vs Galgate game we had a late kick off and Crown Lane started with a 6 – 0 head start as unfortunately Galgate were late.  The game finished 9 – 1 to Crown Lane with neither team really getting going, but Crown Lane edging it in the time that was played.

Matt Sowerby spoke to us at 9pm.  He shared a verse from the Bible (1 John 1 verse 9) which says “If we confess our sins, He (God) is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  Matt talked about how his car gets dirty and needs cleaning and how in a similar way our lives need cleaning from the sin and ‘dirt’ that we have in our lives.  The only way this can be done is through giving it over to Jesus and asking for His forgiveness.  And if we really mean it and give Him control of our lives, then He will forgive us and cleanse (clean) us.

In the late games both of the Capernwray teams were playing their last games of the season and looking to finish on a high note.  Unfortunately the Staff team were up against an Ingleton team that have been flying recently and with everyone chipping in with goals for Ingleton and in particular Dan Hallam again dictating play and dominating the game, the Staff team were opened up in a game that ended 17 – 4 to Ingleton.  With 2 winnable games left for Chipping, they were hoping to move up a couple of places in the league to get their highest ever finish.  Results had gone their way earlier in the night with Carnforth and Galgate both loosing.  As with most games that the Capernwray Students play in, it started out at a fast pace.  Chipping were struggling to contain the Students and after about 6 minutes it was the Students who took the lead.  As the half went on, Chipping started to get into the game more and they got the equaliser just before half time.  Second half started and it looked like Chipping would push on for the win, but from a corner, Matty Overweel made a late run and headed the Students back into the lead.  The Students were playing their best game since Christmas and were well organised against a very good Chipping team.  As much as Chipping were pushing for an equaliser, the Students were keeping them at bay, but with 8 minutes to go Chipping won a penalty which was cooly dispatched to level the scores and dash the Students chances.  And from looking likely to win, it was now backs against the wall for the Students as Chipping looked for a winner.  With only a minute or two left after a bit of pinball on the edge of the Students ‘D’, the ball dropped to Joe Kelsall, who placed his shot beyond the despairing Capernwray keeper.  Sadly for the Students they had nothing to show for a great performance.

Results:

Young Guns 10 – 9 Carnforth

Crown Lane 9 – 1 Galgate

Capernwray Staff 4 – 17 Ingleton

Chipping 3 – 2 Capernwray Students
