SportsReach Football league results – 18th November

20 Nov

Only 3 games took place this weekend, with Lancaster vs. Loko, scheduled for this weekend, being played earlier in the season. Two league games took place, with both Wray and Great Eccleston looking to continue their 100% winning starts to the season, facing Fulwood and Preston City Mission respectively. Quernmore travelled to Moorlands too, playing the first leg of their Champions cup fixture.

Eccy hammer Preston

Great Ecc 11 – 2 Preston City Mission

Jack Sharples 21, 32, 35, Toby Parker 48, 53, Sam Hogarth 57, 75, Jonny Leech 60, 73, Den Pulford 66, Tom Shields 68 // Catalin Oprea 25, Daniel Ungureanu 28

It took 21 minutes for Great Ecc to break Preston City Mission down before taking the lead through Jack Sharples with a neat finish. PCM then stunned the home side as they equalized with a sensational long range strike from 30 yards into the top right corner through Catalin Oprea. And soon Great Ecc were 1-2 down after Simon Greenhalgh was adjudged to have tripped a Preston player in the area and the subsequent penalty was scored by Daniel Ungureanu in the 28th minute. Jack Sharples then scored the equalizer with a great cross field curling effort that nestled just inside the far post leaving the keeper no chance.  Before halftime, Jack Sharples claimed his hat-trick to give Great Ecc the lead again. 3-2. Moving into the second half,  Great Ecc were able to grab another two goals to add to their lead, Toby Parker netting in the 48th and 53rd minute. In the 57th minute, Sam Hogarth let rip with a pile driver that flew past the keeper. Some great running and closing from Jonny Leech was rewarded when he scored with a deft header from a delicious cross from Tom Shields who found his second wind after coming back on. Dennis Pulford then battled through two defenders to calmly slot the ball past the out rushing keeper. Toby Parker then broke clear down the left and was brought down by the keeper. Tom Shields stepped up to take the penalty and added to Great Ecc’s ever increasing lead. Preston were struggling to get out of their own half, and under constant pressure they succumbed again, as Jonny Leech bamboozled the right back and keeper with a cheeky near post finish. Great Ecc scored the final goal of the game, with Sam Hogarth netting again.

Wray hammer struggling Fulwood

Fulwood 2 – 6 Wray

Matty Leach 15, Howard Mason 65 //  Will Preece, 20, Jake Fawcett, 26, 29, 48 Phil Talbot 69, Nick Taplin, 79

Wray arrived at Fulwood full of confidence following their recent results, however it was far from an easy afternoon for Wray however, with Fulwood starting the brighter of the two sides and opening the scoring with a well taken finish, Matty Leach netting in the 15th minute. Wray battled back into the game and got back on level terms when Preece’s long range free-kick deceived everyone and curled over and away from the Fulwood ‘keeper to make it 1-1.
That put some much needed spark back into the visitors and after a delightful through ball from George Whitaker, Fawcett found himself one-on-one and he made no mistake, firing past the Fulwood goalkeeper to put the visitors ahead. Then in the 29th minute, a fantastic cross by George Whitaker to the near post was controlled by the forward, who then swiveled and smashed home from close range. The visitors came out after the break hoping to add to their tally and it didn’t take long. Wray were awarded a penalty after a push in the box and up stepped Fawcett to send the ‘keeper the wrong way and to complete his second hat-trick of the season. Fulwood continued to push forward despite that goal and they managed to pull one back with an unmarked header, Howard Mason netting in the 65th minute. Wray continued to battle on and they got their just rewards when Talbot picked up the ball on the edge of the area, before curling an unstoppable effort into the top corner. That sensational effort was soon followed by Taplin’s second of the season, after he clinically fired past the Fulwood ‘keeper into the bottom left-hand corner to make it six and to seal a great afternoon for Wray.

Champions Cup: First leg: Quernmore continue good run

Moorlands 1 – 3 Quernmore

Joe Hobbs 44 // Mark Hutchinson 14, 67, Tom Kelsall 25

Quernmore came into this game looking to continue the good performance they put together against Fulwood a few weeks ago, facing a Moorlands team that has been struggling for form in recent weeks. Quernmore started the game the brighter, looking to expose the gaps in the Moorlands back line and looking for their wing backs to expose the space on the wings. And it was Quernmore who opened the scoring, with Mark Hutchinson netting for Quernmore after the balled bounced around the box after a good corner in the 14th minute. Quernmore continued to press, with their midfield three working hard and winning the midfield battle, knocking lots of through balls to the attacking quartet for Quernmore. In the 25th minute Quernmore doubled their lead, Tom Kelsall taking a clever touch in the box to put him 1 on 1 with the Moorlands keeper, placing it below him. Moorlands, however, continued to work hard, looking to grab a goal on the counter attack. However, on the stroke of half time, it was from a quickly taken free kick that they found their goal. Moorlands were awarded a free kick on the half way line and played a quick ball to their striker, who crossed it into the onrushing Joe Hobbs, smashing it below the diving keeper. Both sides continued to press, Moorlands looking for the equalizer, whilst Quernmore searched for their third goal – and it was Quernmore who got the fourth goal of the match. Mark Hutchinson popped up in the box again after another superb Quernmore corner and smashed the ball home in the 67th minute. Both teams continued to press and work hard, but the score stayed the same and Quernmore grabbed their second win in as many games.
