SPORTSREACH 5ASIDE LEAGUE

11 Jan

In the early games we had the top two teams from last year facing each other.  Ingleton who got back to winning ways last week, were up against a Crown Lane team who have had a slight dip in form.  Ingleton, full of confidence and with a strong team out, took the game to Crown Lane and only some good saves from James Rosendale kept the scores close as the half went on.  Crown Lane stuck in there and rode the pressure to clinically take some of their chances and going into the last 5 minutes found themselves 3 – 2 up, only for Ingleton to find a late goal and deservedly take a share of the points.  Special mention must go to Dave Lawson who had a fantastic game in the Ingleton goal.  In the other early game, Galgate (who were missing a number of key men) were up against Carnforth.  Galgate only had 4 players and so after a few minutes Carnforth went down to 4 as well.  This made for an extremely high scoring and open game!!  Carnforth were 8 – 4 up at half time and even though Galgate started the second half strongly, Carnforth managed to win 13 – 9.

Sid Emerson came to speak to us.  He started by asking us what things we were hungry for and then asked what we were willing to sacrifice to get those things.  Sid shared from a couple of passages out of the Bible… Firstly John chapter 6 verse 27 where Jesus says “Do not labour for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”  And then he spoke from verse 35 where Jesus continues “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to Me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst.”  Sid urged us to seek and to hunger after God.

In the 9pm games Capernwray Students were looking to get revenge against the Capernwray Staff team.  Unfortunately for them, Staff had Steven Havelin, who was in exception form and scored and created some sublime goals.  Students did grow into the game and even won 2 penalties, but when they were presented with opportunities, just didnt take enough of them to put Staff under any real pressure.

In the other 9pm game, Chipping who were at full strength were up against Wray.  This turned out to be one of the toughest games Wray have had all season.  Chipping started the brighter and seemed quicker to the loose balls.  Early in the game Harry Gorst made a number of good saves for Wray and as the half went on Wray managed to pick Chipping off on the few occasions when they missed marking a man.  Into the second half and Wray started to look more comfortable, but Chipping raised their game again and took the score to 5 – 4 with time left to get an equaliser.  Wray however had been in this position before this season and were very well organised right to the end of the game, to take the win and move 2 more points away from their nearest competitors.

Results:

Carnforth 13 – 9 Galgate

Crown Lane 3 – 3 Ingleton

Capernwray Staff 11 – 2 Capernwray Students

Wray 5 – 4 Chipping
