SPORTSREACH 5ASIDE LEAGUE

This weeks fixtures pulled out some great match ups and on a cold and wet night we had some really close games.

In the 8pm games, a strong Galgate team were looking to take points off Crown Lane.  This was their first meeting, with the reverse fixture being postponed back in November when the astroturf was flooded.  The game was very fast paced with Galgate looking to attack from the off and managing to get themselves 4 – 1 up heading towards half time.  Crown Lane started to get on top and create chances in an open game and got a goal back just before half time, and then into the second half they clinically scored 6 goals without reply.  Rob Fox made an exceptional save from a powerful close range shot, to give Galgate a slither of hope and going into the final minutes Galgate managed to score two more, but couldn’t do enough to get back on level terms.  Ingleton are starting to get a settled team again in recent weeks and had started to pick up some good results.  They were up against Carnforth, who knew that they would have to dig in to get any result, after conceding 16 goals last time the two teams met!  Ingleton started really strongly scoring 2 goals in the first two minutes, with Dan Hallam again the driving force for Ingleton.  Carnforth managed to quickly respond with two of their own and as the game went on, it was very tight with goals shared evenly.  Ingleton had the better chances but for a few wayward shots and some fantastic saves from Thomas Salmon in Carnforths goal, they couldn’t pull away.  With just a couple of minutes to go Carnforth finally took the lead for the first time as Tom Harrison scored his hat trick with another sharp turn and finish, and it was enough to take the points for Carnforth as they sat back and defended the final moments out.

James Rosendale told a story of a man who had an amazing amount of wealth and possessions, who made plans to take a trip away for a long time.  However the man didnt put anyone in charge of his estate whilst he was away.  The man had a hired servant who wasn’t very bright and his master had given him a stick one day and told him to pass it onto anyone he found who was more foolish than he was.  The hired servant spent time looking around, but couldn’t find anyone to give the stick too.  But one day before his master left on his trip, he spoke to him and said that he would give him the stick, because it was so foolish not to make arrangements for all his possessions and farms and vineyards, whilst he was away.  He told his master that it would fall into disrepair and there would be nobody to pick up the pieces. James told us how we can be like that foolish master.  We spend so much of our lives planning for the here and now, but we have an eternity ahead of us, and many of us live with no consideration of that.  James encouraged us that only through believing in Jesus and turning to Him, can we have eternity in Heaven.  Life is short and none of us deserve to go to Heaven.  The Bible says that if we got what we deserved, we would all be destined for Hell.  But because of Jesus, we can be saved and have life everlasting.

In the late games we had Chipping taking on Capernwray Students and Real VVV against Capernwray Staff.  Chipping have had some very tight games in recent weeks but haven’t many points to show for their good performances, but they started strongly against the students.  Chipping had to be very well organised as the students worked tirelessly to try to break them down, but found it hard to make any meaningful chances.  At half time Chipping led 3 – 0 and going into the second half, the next goal would be key.  Chipping managed to find it and ended up winning the game comfortably.  On transfer deadline day, Real VVV made their own last minute signing, bringing in Thomas Blades in goal.  He hadnt played for a few years, but played well, and showed that he still had quick reflexes, when getting down to tip a couple of good shots out of the bottom corners of his goal.  Staff took a 2 – 0 lead and VVV looked a bit of the pace early in the game, but they improved as the first half went on and took a 4 – 2 lead into half time, including a great goal from Alan Wadsworth, who from the edge of his own box, ran, intercepted the ball off staff, went round a player and cooly finished past the Staff keeper.  VVV kept up their intensity as they started the second half and added 2 more goals, before the staff fightback began.  Michel Koch scored a fantastic goal as he rode the challenges of two VVV players and from an angle, hit a screamer across the keeper and into the top corner.  This was just what the staff team needed and just when VVV thought they had the game won, Staff scored again to bring the scores within 2.  Staff kept pressing and managed to find one more goal, but VVV had just about done enough for the 3 points.

Results:

Galgate 6 – 8 Crown Lane

Carnforth 5 – 4 Ingleton

Capernwray Staff 5 – 6 Real VVV

Capernwray Students 0 – 5 Chipping
