SPORTSREACH 5ASIDE LEAGUE
Round 4 of the 5aside league and we had 4 match ups that were all games between teams who who close to each other in the league table. In the 8pm games we had Garstang and Lune Valley Utd both looking for their first points of the season and unbeaten Wray against the surprise early form team of Carnforth.
Lune Valley had a strong team out including new signing Dave Whitfield in nets and were quickly into their rhythm, picking Garstang off every few minutes and taking a 4 – 0 lead into half time, which included a great half volley from Sam Dennis from the half way line. Into the second half and Garstang improved, getting 2 goals back, but as the game went on, Lune Valley Utd took control again and scored 4 more. Garstang worked hard for each other but were just lacking a cutting edge in front of goal. The pick of the second half goals was from Alan Wadsworth, who curled his shot right into the top corner from the edge of the ‘D’. In the other game Carnforth caught Wray out in the first few minutes with Kuba Rusakiewia and Damien Kitchen both scoring. Wray were caught by surprise and struggled to get going, but they did manage to get a goal back just before half time. Into the second half and it was Wray who got 2 quick goals to turn the game around with Mark Ellershaw getting his second of the game. Both teams pushed, but cancelled each other out until right at the end of the game when Wray managed to make sure of their win with the last goal.
At 9pm John Gorst spoke to the lads. He shared about what happened to Jesus’ disciples after Jesus had died and then risen from the grave and gone to be with His Father in Heaven. This group of followers who had previously gone into hiding and were afraid, when Jesus was arrested, were now willing to die because they knew Jesus had risen from the grave and their lives had been completely changed. Andrew, who was in Greece telling people about Jesus, was severely whipped before being tied to a cross by ropes, to prolong his death. His followers reported that when Andrew was being led towards the cross and his death, Andrew said “I have long desired and expected this happy hour.” He then continued to preach to his tormenters for two days until he died. Why was he looking forward to this day? Because it was the time that he was going to be with Jesus again, in Eternity, and he had longed for that day. John challenged the lads to look into the historic proof of Jesus and to seek Him and to give their lives over to Jesus.
In the late games we had Quernmore taking on Capernwray, who were playing their first game of the season and two of the unbeaten teams, Crown Lane and Roeburndale Rascals, playing each other. It took Capernwray a bit of time to get used to how to play, as they are a new group of students and had previously only played together indoors in a sports hall. Quernmore took advantage taking a 3 goal lead, but Capernwray who were quick and athletic pulled the game back to 4 -3. As the game went on Quernmore just managed to keep possession and retain the ball better than the students and eventually ran out 8 – 3 winners, with Mick Lund getting 5 and Capernwrays very own Ian Ellershaw getting a hat trick against his own students!! Crown Lane against Roeburndale Rascals was from the very start, a game played at high speed between some great players. Crown Lane scored first with a great turn and shot by Luke Parkinson before Will Preece scored an equally good equaliser. The Rascals then took the lead as a ball was played straight upfield to Luke Gorst, who managed to flick a header into the opposite top corner of the Crown Lane goal. Minutes later Oliver Parkinson pulled the scores back level, only for Will Preece to score the goal of the game, rasping a fierce shot from out wide. Both teams continued to create chances but couldn’t find a way past goalkeepers Matt Dawson and James Rosendale and a very entertaining game ended 3 -2 to the Rascals from Roeburndale.
Garstang 2 – 8 Lune Valley Utd
Carnforth 2 – 4 Wray
Capernwray 3 – 8 Quernmore
Roeburndale Rascals 3 – 2 Crown Lane
