SPORTSREACH 5ASIDE LEAGUE

Round 14 of the 5aside league – Wednesday 12th December 2018.

With 3 important fixtures left to play on the last night of games before the Winter break, we finished with some very good quality football.  Roeburndale Rascals had completed their 10 games the previous week and set the benchmark of 25 points and it was left to Crown Lane, Quernmore and Wray to try to catch them up, all starting the night on 21 points. Quernmore were up against Crown Lane in the only late game, but first up it was Wray, who were looking to close the gap as they played Ingleton.  Ingleton started the game slowly and with Wray eager to chase down Roeburndale, they started quickly and were free scoring with Martin Huddleston getting his hat trick within the first 7 minutes and scoring 6 by half time.  Mark Ellershaw was also in the goals and had 4 himself in the first half.  At half time Wray were 13 – 0 up.  Things didnt get any better in the second half and both Mark and Martin took their tally’s to 9 goals a piece, with Steven Wright adding 4 and Stephen Harrison also getting a hat trick.  James Burr scored Wray’s other goal.  Ingleton did manage a consolation goal, but what a goal it was.  Derek Palmer, who was in net for the first half, came out and playing up front, lashed a half volley into the roof of the net after a lovely ball over the top of Wray’s defence.

Lune Valley against Chipping was on paper always gong to be a very close game, with only 2 points separating the sides before play.  After such a close game last week in which Chipping lost by 1 goal, it was their turn to win by the odd goal, in a very hard fought 7 – 6 victory.  Stand out performers were James Sutton with a hat trick for Lune Valley Utd and Stephen Coranll with a hat trick for Chipping.  Lune Valleys other scorers were Stephen Midwinter, Nathan Park and Alan Wadsworth.  Chipping’s were Oscar Foot (2), Joe Kelsall and Stephen Whitaker.  The result leaves Chipping in 7th place as the league splits after Christmas.

The speaker at 9pm was Luke Parkinson.  Luke asked us how do we know who God is?  Lots of people have different ideas of who He is and what He is like.  Luke encouraged us to look in the Bible to see what God is like, as He reveals Himself through the pages.  As we read about Him, we will find that He is far greater and more important than our minds can imagine, and yet He is interested in us and wants us to follow Him.

In the late kick off, it was the game with top billing.  Quernmore had already pulled off some upsets including beating Roeburndale, but with a team that seems to change each week, you can never tell how strong they will be.  Crown Lane have had a settled team for 4 years and would be a tough game for them and so it proved, with Crown Lane racing into an early lead through Oliver Parkinson.  3 further goals were added before half time to take a commanding lead into the second half and one they wouldn’t look back from.  Quernmore did pull a couple of goals back from Danny Garratt in the second half, but they couldn’t stop Crown Lane, as the team in white drove forward time after time.  Oliver Parkinson completed his hat trick, and James Rosendale got a brace.  Keith Townley and Dan Parkinson also weighed in with a goal apiece, but it was Sam Hogarth who hammered the nails into Quernmore’s coffin, scoring the last 4 goals of the game to take his total to 7 and secure a vital win for Crown Lane.

Results:

Lune Valley Utd 6 – 7 Chipping

Ingleton 1 – 26 Wray

Crown Lane 14 – 2 Quernmore
