Congratulations are in order as Lancaster United are champions of the SportsReach League 2015/16. The boys in blue now have an unassailable lead at the top of the table following Longton’s defeat to Wray on Saturday. Still unbeaten in the league, Lancaster’s triumph has been built on tremendous team spirit with the likes of Dan Sudell, Jonny Sudell and captain Martin Lewis playing significant roles to lead the side to the title. Organised in defence, dominant in midfield and quick in attack, the team have had the perfect balance all season and are still on course for a Treble with the Champions Cup Final taking place early next month.
Longton, champions for the last two seasons, were unable to keep pace at the top and their challenge was derailed by a 4-3 defeat to Wray on Saturday. Longton’s line-up featured a mixture of youth and new registrations having, once again, struggled to maintain a regular line-up. Wray’s sharp and vibrant attack took full advantage and raced into a 3-0 lead at half-time. Longton pulled two goals back early in the second half and comeback looked to be on the cards but a fourth goal for Wray extinguished those hopes. A late consolation made it 4-3.
Elsewhere, League Cup finalists Fleetwood recorded a 7-2 away victory at Fulwood with the seven goals coming from just two players – Jack Hayton with a four goal haul and Andi Smart notching a hat-trick. Fulwood player-manager Danny Garratt notched a late penalty for his side.
