Round 13 of the 5aside league – Wednesday 5th December 2018.
In the first games, Roeburndale Rascals were looking to win their last game before the Christmas break and finish top of the tree at Christmas, as they took on a very strong Newbigginners side who were full of confidence themselves. The game didnt disappoint and right from the off, it was a quick and physical game played, with very little space for anybody. By half time Roeburndale had their noses in front 3 – 2. Into the second half and Roeburndale pulled clear with the help of 2 penalties to win 7 – 3. Goals came from Colin Sowerby, John Kelsall and Dan Hallam for Newbigginners and 4 for James Lawson, 2 for Matt Dawson and 1 for Will Huddleston for the Rascals.
In the other early game Quernmore were looking to keep apace of Roeburndale as they took on Lune Valley Utd. Mick Lund opened the scoring for Quernmore, before Jonny Sudell cut past a couple of defenders and lashed a beautiful shot in, to double their lead. Nearing halftime and Quernmore went three up as Jonny played a lovely through ball into the path of Luke Sutton, who made no mistake as he placed his shot into the bottom corner. 3 – 0 flattered Quernmore as Lune Valley had matched them, but just not been clinical up until this point, but just as the whistle was about to blow for half time, Nathan Park drove a low shot into the Quernmore goal, to give Lune Valley hope. Into the second half and Lune Valley were matching Quernmore, but again struggling to find a way through a stubborn defence. That was until the referee adjudged that the keeper had handled outside his area. Nathan dispatched the penalty to bring the scores back to 3 – 2. Lune Valley kept pushing for the equaliser, but it was Quernmore who would score next with another neatly taken goal by Mick Lund. This was followed by another lovely goal from Jonny Sudell, as the game was drifting away from Lune Valley. With just a couple of minutes left and a comeback unlikely, Sam Dennis did pull a goal back for them, before Jonny scored his hat trick goal to seal a 6 – 3 win.
Matt Sowerby was the speaker at 9pm and he shared openly and honestly about sin and how we all have areas of our lives that aren’t right and how easy it is to do what we don’t want to do, when we are tempted. Matt went on to tell us who Jesus is and why He came to save us and to forgive us and to change us.
In the late games Chipping were playing the in form Capernwray team and Carnforth were up against Garstang. In what was a very tight game from start to finish Capernwray came out on top by 5 goals to 4. In the other game Carnforth started strongly as the returning Callum Thompson opened the scoring to take his talley of goals to 16, after not playing since getting injured in the third game of the season. John Gorst doubled Carnforths lead with a header before getting is second from close range after being put through by Callum. Garstang looking to get back into the game, pulled a goal back through a well taken goal from Matt Sowerby. Into the second half and Callum scored his second from a great throw out from keeper, Tom Salmon. They scored again as John scored his third before Dean Hoggarth finished off another good Carnforth move. Matt Sowerby got the last goal of the game for Garstang in what was a game played in a good spirit.
