This month, the clocks aren’t the only thing going back as the SportsReach All Day Tournament was brought from its habitual springtime berth to the crisp, autumnal setting of October.
After a powerful early morning message from Andy Thomas in the packed Carnforth High School sports hall, ten teams – separated into two groups of five – began their pursuit of All Day Tournament glory.
Great Eccleston, Loko, St John’s of Accrington, Heysham and reigning champions Lancaster were in Group 1 with Fulwood, Crown Lane, Quernmore, Kendal and Longton in Group 2.
After four games played, the semi-finals were upon us featuring the top two teams from each group. A strong Quernmore side and organised Kendal team emerged from Group 2 whilst Lancaster once again made it through to the latter stages along with the impressive St John’s.
In the semi-finals, Lancaster came up against Quernmore in a match that seemed hard to call, and so it proved as both teams were deadlocked at 0-0 after normal time and onto penalties we went – with Lancaster winning 5-4 on spot kicks.
The second semi-final ensured a ‘guest’ team from outside the SportsReach Football League structure would be in the final and it was St John’s of Accrington who overcame Kendal by two goals to nil.
At the end of a long day, the standard of football was still incredibly high as Lancaster and St John’s went head to head for glory and it was the reigning champions Lancaster – benefiting from a large and talented squad – who triumphed 3-1 and lifted the All Day Tournament trophy once again.
Thank you to all players, managers and particularly officials and administrators for their hard work on the day. Congratulations once again to Lancaster.
