SportsReach 5-a-side roundup

26 Sep

This week there were another 4 great games in the SportsReach 5-a-side league, with all the games very competitive and tight, resulting in some great games to watch. In the early games, Lune Valley faced Newbigginners, playing their first game of the season. In the other early game, there was a big game in the context of the League title race, with Roeburndale Rascals facing Wray. In the 9pm games, Carnforth faced Garstang, whilst Ingleton faced Light Church.

Roeburndale Rascals vs Wray was a great game to watch. Both Huddleston brothers weren’t wanting either to win any ball in the air or on the ground. The first half ended 0-0 as both Gorst brothers managed to keep a clean sheet with some good keeping. This was a very tight game with neither side wanting to give anything away. A 50/50 first half with Will Preece trying to break down the Wray defence but Ben Walbank had a solid game as ever, with both himself and Steven Wright playing in defence but able to find room and space to attract also!

All the goals came in the second half with Rascals scoring first to give Wray something to think about. Will Huddleston struck a shot and the ball hit the left hand post, rolling along the line onto the right hand post. It just crossed over the line! 1-0. Wray, however, came back with two more goals from Ben Walbank and Harry Gorst after Harry leaving the haven of the goal to play some great football out field with Stephen Wright going between the sticks. Matt Dawson scored Rascals second goal with a power drive hard and low which flew into the bottom corner, but Martin Huddleston popped up when needed to find the winner late on to leave them with a 3-2 win to Wray.

In the other game, it started out as a tight affair between Lune Valley and Newbigginers, neither side giving the other much time on the ball and looking to take the advantage early on in the game. It was a really good game and it is great to have Newbigginers back in the league this season. Newbigginers took the lead in the game, firing past keeper Jonny Sudell. Both sides kept battling, with Artur Mello bagging two in the first half. At half time, it was 4-2 to Newbigginers.

Into the second half both sides battled hard to find the goals to get the win, but as the half wore on, Newbigginers began to stretch their advantage and scored a couple more goals to but them in a commanding position. But Lune Valley continued to work hard and scored two through James Sutton and Artur Mello, who completed his hattrick. Sutton’s goal was arguably the goal of the game as he fire the ball home on the volley after a sweet cross from his team mate. The game ended 8-5 to Newbigginers, but what a game it was!

We had Alan Wadsworth sharing this week, speaking on hope. He spoke of the future hope that those who follow Jesus have and the peace that can bring even when death is approaching. He also shared a few verses from 1 Peter ch1 about the hope we can have as followers of Jesus.

In this late game, both teams set out to try and take 3 points. Carnforth kicked off and soon got into form. Having the same formation and team as the week before they soon got into gear with goals. But this weeks golden boot went to Damien Kitching, snatching it away from Callum the week before with his 7 goal rampage. Kitching came away from tonight’s game with 5 goals from a 8-4 win. And Cal managed to take another goal to add to his tally. In the first half both teams played some great football and both teams looked to be settled and enjoying the football. Both side attacked well but the Carnforth duo of Cal and Kitching is coming back this season to cause the opposition problems. Cal just couldn’t find the net enough tonight but linked well enough with Kitching to let him slot them home. Garstang played some good football, with Ben standing out tonight and managing to score to for his well traveled Garstang side! Nathan had a sharp-game too scoring a good goal early on in the first half. Tom Whitaker came out of nets in the second half to give Luke Sutton a rest as he was up early for milking this morning and in taking the gloves on he did a solid job and made some good saves to keep his team in the game. Whitaker ran his socks off for 20mins, creating more work for Nathan and Gorst. Having worked so hard Whitaker’s efforts were rewarded with a well taken goal to finish off their goal tally for the night!

In the second late game, Light Church faced a good Ingleton side, who were unfortunate to lose last week to Crown Lane. Both sides started the game well and were looking to take an early lead. In this game, one side took their chances much better than the other, with Light Church taking the chances coming their way much more effectively than Ingleton. By half time, Light Church had stretched their advantage to 6-2. Into the second half and both sides were battling hard and it made it a good game for the spectator to watch. Light Church grabbed another goal to make it 7-2, stretching them into a dream lead, before Ingleton grabbed one back to step on their coat tails! Both sides scored again and battled until the final whistle, but Light Church took the result 8-4, to get their first win of the season What a great result for them!

Next week we have a number of exciting games with Roeburndale Rascals wanting to bounce back from defeat to face Garstang, while Sam Dennis’ team face a tough to beat Wray side. In the late games, Crown Lane face Chipping in what promises to be a really interesting game to watch, whilst Newbigginers will want to continue their good start to the season, facing a Capernwray side playing their first game of the season.
